Join us at Afrori Books on July 19th at 6.30pm for an engaging evening with Dean Atta and Nii Ayikwei Parkes. Dean, an award-winning Black British author and poet, will be in conversation with Nii, a renowned Ghanaian-British writer, editor, and performance poet.

Dean is known for his powerful and candid writing, has received accolades for his debut poetry collection, "I Am Nobody’s Nigger," and his young-adult novel in verse, "The Black Flamingo." Dean’s work explores themes of identity, acceptance, and queer joy, making a significant impact on readers.

Nii is celebrated for his diverse literary achievements, has won numerous international awards, including the ACRAG award. His acclaimed novel, "Tail of the Blue Bird," won France's prestigious Prix Baudelaire and Prix Laure Bataillon.

Dean will be discussing his new book, "Person Unlimited," a candid and courageous memoir that explores his life across many roles: from choirboy to drag act, grandson to mentor, poet to lover. This book delves into what he has carried in his body—wins and losses, shame and pride, pain and joy—and investigates how radical self-acceptance and a willingness to abide with discomfort open up the possibility of a life lived beyond definition.

"Person Unlimited" speaks to everyone but will resonate with those who've had to limit themselves due to society’s prejudice—be that for reasons of sexuality, race, gender, or simply because they don’t conform to society’s narrow expectations. As Lemn Sissay puts it, “Years ago within living memory this book would have been illegal and Dean could have been imprisoned for writing it. All memoir is a witness statement. Dean Atta, speak your truth and say it loud.”

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from two influential voices in contemporary writing. Expect an evening of inspiring conversation, insightful readings, and the chance to meet these remarkable authors.

Come along and be part of this literary celebration at Afrori Books!
